Chart Named Goo Commentary for 04/26/2003
Another week, another chart. This chart marks the 224th week in Chart Named Goo’s existence and October 18, 2003 is the date of the next significant milestone chart and that is the 250th chart. It’s just an random thought and we’ll be left to ponder if the songs that are on this week’s chart would be on the 250th chart in October.

3 Doors Down earns a second week with “When I’m Gone.” After the massive successful “Kryponite,” 3 Doors Down had a unrightful drought from the chart. Looking back on the singles, “Loser” and “If I Could Be Like That,” it downright unbelievable that those singles never made the chart. “When I’m Gone” is 3 Doors Down’s first number one hit and it is already a prime candidate to pass the 30-week mark in a couple of months. The follow-up to “When I’m Gone” which “The Road I’m On” is already at #11 and is knocking on the door to get into the top ten.

No Doubt will have to wait another week (or more?) for their shot for their 3rd number one of all-time and to tie the record for most #1 singles from an album. If “Running” hits number one, it will join former #1 hits “Hella Good” and “Hey Baby” from the album Rock Steady. Britney Spears’ ...Baby One More Time and Alien Ant Farm’s ANThology currently holds the record. Speaking of this record, Justin Timberlake also has a chance to tie this record as “Rock Your Body” rises 7-6. Justin Timberlake’s first two singles from Justified have already been number one hits.

Matchbox 20 rises 4-3 with “Unwell” and they are going for their 2nd number one single to follow-up the first CNG number one hit of 2003, “Disease.” Meanwhile, Audioslave slips 3-4 with “Like A Stone.” The Counting Crows are riding a ‘big yellow taxi’ up the chart and into the top five. Their collobaration with Vanessa Carlton rises 8-5 this week. Boomkat’s “The Wreckoning” and Avril Lavigne’s “Losing Grip” both rises two spots from #9 and #10 respectively. Pay The Girl’s suprise hit, “Freeze,” drops 5-9 but it’s still a great showing for a song that isn’t getting much attention on the radio airwaves. Unwritten Law returns to the top ten after a nine-month absense with the sentimential lyrics accomponied by the accoustic guitar instrumentation of “Rest Of My Life.” This is actually a real sleeper hit as “Rest In My Life” actually drops off the chart for a couple weeks in early February. The Exies, Good Charlotte, Nelly and Sugababes are all waiting in the wings to be the next top ten hits.

Following up the success of last week’s greatest gainer, “Times Like These,” Foo Fighters make a respectible 36-24 jump. Sixpence None The Richer is starting to gain positions on the chart as “Don’t Dream It’s Over” makes a 40-27 jump. Sugababes’s 4th single, “Shape” makes a 55-42 jump this week. Simple Plan is attempting to follow the sucess of “I’d Do Anything (#4)”. They seem to be on the right track as “Addicted” makes a 65-55 jump. This week’s greatest gainer goes to The Donnas this week. Even though “Take It Off” is still rising on the chart, their next single “Who Invited You” rises 19 spots from #78 to #59. Also, Bay Area punk rockers AFI rises makes a 97-81 jump in just their second week on the chart.

This is one of the most exciting charts in a while because there’s an abundance of debuts in both the main chart and the breakouts chart this week. The Hot Shot Debut was a hard task to do this week because there were a lot of incredible songs that are debuting this week. That’s why you see the top 4 debuts of the chart within 7 positions of each other. Aussie rocks Silverchair ends up taking the honor as their Beatle-esque “Across The Night” debuts at #72. If you haven’t heard this song yet, you need to do so because it’s one of those songs that takes your breath away. This song has every element in a good song: introspective lyrics, great composition and instrumentation, and keeps the interest of your ears for the whole song. The other three debuts that were in serious consideration for Hot Shot Debut were Aussie songstress Delta Goodrem, R. Kelly & Fleetwood Mac. Other debuts this week comes from Queens Of The Stone Age, Wave, In-Grid, Theory Of A Deadman, LeAnn Rimes, Lasgo, Madonna & Uncle Kracker. There’s a breathtaking 33 debuts on the breakouts chart this week also. I won’t go into any detail right now into all the debuts but there’s some notable up-and-coming songs to check out.

There are two songs this week that are recieving Kajagoogoo Awards for remaining on the chart for 30 weeks or more. Nick Carter's "Help Me" reaches its 30th week at #67 this week. This song started fast out of the gates by making a 36-spot jump from #66-#30 in its 2nd charted week. It ended up rising up to #2 and spending 2 weeks at that position. It was held at #2 by Madonna's "Die Another Day" and the 5th #1 week of Santana & Michelle Branch's "Game Of Love." The song is still primed to stay on the chart for awhile and maybe it will even reach the 40-week mark. Las Ketchup's "The Ketchup Song" is the other entry into the Kajagoogoo record books this week. It was one of the biggest international singles last year and it even had its own dance. "The Ketchup Song" is the first song that not entirely sung in English to reach the 30-week mark and that accomplishment is commendable in itself. It means that Chart Named Goo is embracing songs that are not exactly sung in English and that it's not a barrier anymore for a foreign-language song to chart. "The Ketchup Song" is at #100 this week so there's little doubt that the song will fall off the chart in the next week or so. When the song falls off the chart, we'll remember the group that made condiments trendy again, even though the song has nothing to do with ketchup.

So, all in all, a good chart this week. Hopefully, this web site will continue to gain attention and so, if you dig my chart, spread the word around about it, and link me. Let me know if you want to be linked from the web site too. To all of you ‘chart fanatics’ out there, enjoy the week and keep your spirits up!
