Limp Bizkit, Britney Spears Makes Comebacks After Long Hiatuses
Fred Durst (lead singer of Limp Bizkit) and Britney Spears made tabloid headlines together in early 2003 with their quickie relationship which caused Durst to lash out to the world of Spears' pitfalls in the magazines and radio. Of course, Spears is the poster child for "let's just get done" romance. Whether intentional or accidental, a wild party in Las Vegas lead to a marriage which immediately got annulled the next day. I think it can be agreed that Spears get more attention for her escapades than her actual music.
To me, Limp Bizkit looked dead around this time last year. After Limp Bizkit's guitarist Wes Borland, whose musical talents led many to the band, left the band in late 2001, Durst led a nationwide search to find a new guitarist among the masses. This search led to multiple rumors of when the now-titled Results May Vary album will come out. To my memory, the album came out at least six months of when online music news authorities say it will come out. The first single from Results May Vary was "Eat You Alive" (#15), which peaked high early in its chart run but quickly faded off the countdown. A couple months later, I heard the next single, "Behind Blue Eyes", and I was quickly impressed with it. The Who recorded this song in 1971 which charted at #34 on the Hot 100. This is the song that I felt Limp Bizkit had the potential to do but never have done before: a accoustic, stripped-down and emotional power ballad. Much of the online reaction to this song is questioning why the 80s' toy "Speak-N-Spell" makes a left-field sample in the song. Some fan reviews felt this was too gimmicky to be included in the song, especially since it's a ballad. My thoughts on the inclusion of the "Speak-N-Spell" cameo is that it's a interesting transition to the song but it's something that's not neccessary because the song would work without it. One part of the "Speak-N-Spell" break that makes me laugh is when the robot voice is saying L-I-M-P, I listen to the final three letters and it's sounds like "I Am Pee." What's the significance of "Behind Blue Eyes" hitting #1? First off, it's Limp Bizkit's first number one song ever on the chart. They have been close multiple times with 6 top five hits previous to "Behind Blue Eyes". The top five hits of Limp Bizkit are: "Faith" (#3), "Nookie" (#3), "Rearranged (#2), "Rollin'" (#5), "My Way" (#2), "Boiler" (#4) and now "Behind Blue Eyes" (#1). Also, Limp Bizkit officially has the record for longest wait to hit #1 in a chart career: 5 years and almost 1 month. Limp Bizkit was on the first chart (01.16.1999) with "Faith" debuting in the top 10 on the first cover, which was also a cover ironically. Even though Britney Spears has managed to stay big on other personal music charts, Spears is in desperate need of a big hit on this chart. In 1999 and 2000, she was the hottest artist on this chart with 5 number one hits along with two more top ten hits in a 22-month span. She was the first artist to earn a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th number one hit on the chart. Amazingly, she is in position to be the first artist to earn a 6th number one hit with "Toxic." She intially set the record for most number ones on November 11, 2000. It has yet to be broken but it has been tied by five more artists: *N Sync, Blink 182, Sugar Ray, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Michelle Branch. After the Spears mega-hit "Stronger" left the chart, Spears has barely managed to make any big headlines on the chart even though "I'm Slave 4 U" challenged the number one spot with 4 weeks @ #2 in the fall of 2001. Spears had 5 number one hits in a 22-month span (only Michelle Branch had a quickest stretch of time for #1 hits) and now it's 39 months and counting since she has held the number one spot with one of her songs. If "Toxic" hits #1, it will sets two definite records: most number one hits and the longest time gap between number one hits for an artist. If "Toxic" gets three weeks or more at #1, it will give Spears the distinction of having the most combined weeks at #1 for an artist. Currently, *N Sync is the record holder with 17 weeks @ #1 while Britney Spears is behind 2 weeks with 15 weeks @ #1. It's significant that "Toxic" gets into the top ten this week; her first showing in the top ten in 21 months. "Toxic" is Spears' top ten hit. In reference to her Vegas adventures, we're waiting for "Toxic" to roll the dice and win the jackpot but there's a danger of everything being lost if the timing isn't right. Delta Goodrem's "Predictable" jumps to #2 this week; her third top 2 hit. Will "Predictable" match the big success of "Born To Try/Lost Without You" or will be another #2 hit like "Innocent Eyes." The #3 hit this week, "Red Blooded Woman" probably had a premature run @ #1 because it hasn't even been released in the UK, much less the USA, yet, but it probably could have not done any better than two weeks @ #1 if it hit #1 in a couple months. In a month, Minogue has re-established her status as the dance diva of this chart with two top 2 songs peaking in January. I've heard the Body Language album and it looked like there is some #1 potential on some of the songs on the album so we haven't heard the last of Kylie at the #1 spot. Rounding out the top five are "Here Without You" and "Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved)" which have both been in the top ten for a long time. Linkin Park earns an 8th top ten hit this week with "Breaking The Habit." This week's chart highlight is the high debuts. Holly Valance debuts @ #17 with "Desire" which is her first step to follow-up her #1 hit "State Of Mind" with another #1 hit. Deepest Blue gets their second top 50 debut with "Give It Away." For those who are still on the outside of Deepest Blue, they are a house (sub-genre of dance) duo that sort of sounds like Dirty Vegas. Their first hit "Deepest Blue" is one of the few dance hits on the chart that managed to have decent chart longevity in 2003 and 2004. "In The Middle," another catchy single from the Sugababes, debuts at #63. In the 90s section of the chart, two dance songs with big hooks debut: Tube & Berger and LMC vs. U2. Tube & Berger featured Chrissie Hynde (of the Pretenders) on vocals while LMC vs. U2 is an unique hybrid cover of two 80's superhits: U2's "Without Or With You" with Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know." Default & Eve 6 also debut with their latest this week. Chart Design Note: The "red" banner look is only for this week in honor of Valentine's Day. The normal color scheme will return next week. |
