| KYLIE MINOGUE'S "CHOCOLATE" GIVES MINOGUE A TASTY TRIPLE TREAT "Chocolate," by Kylie Minogue, has a short 2-1 jump to give Minogue her 3rd taste at the #1 position. It's the first occurance of consecutive #1 hits for Minogue, as this song is the follow-up to "Red Blooded Woman," which amazingly is still in the top 10 for the 26th straight week. "Chocolate" is also the 3rd single from the Body Language album to hit the #1 or #2 position. As "Chocolate" resides at the #1 position, her other top 10 single, "Red Blooded Woman," is setting a new record this week. Even though "Red Blooded Woman" doesn't have the record of most weeks in the top ten yet, and that record belongs to Linkin Park's "In The End" (30 weeks), RBW is the first song ever to be on every top ten portion of the chart for a complete half of a calender year (January to June or July to December). RBW is also the #1 song on the Mid-Year 2004 chart (chart listed at the botttom of this commentary). CNG'S NEW VISITORS TO THE TOP 40: LOS LONELY BOYS, HAYLIE DUFF & CROSSFADE The Los Lonely Boys are giving new life to a genre (Tex-Mex) that doesn't get much exposure on the top 40 pop charts. Carlos Santana is the only present-day musician that has really made a breakthrough to the mainstream of America. Without him, the "Spanish Guitar" sound will probably stay regional to southwestern U.S.A. and Mexico. Ritchie Valens had the potential to be a huge star for this genre but his life was tragically cut on "the day the music died" by the legendary plane crash that also killed the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly. Herb Alpert is another artist that comes to my mind but his music was more of a jazz sound with horns and trumpets. Los Lobos hit big in 1987 with their Ritchie Valens cover, "La Bamba." "La Bamba" went to #1 for 3 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 but, after this song, the group went away from the pop mainstream and became a "one-hit wonder." In 1995, Selena's fan club president shot her to death and, in effect, mainstream America took notice of her and she became a huge sensation posthumously. Other musicians such as Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira has made strides for Latin rock in America but they are not mentioned here because their sound isn't really the Tex-Mex sound. If I forgot anyone, I apologize to those who know more about the genre than I do. I plead, "ignorance is bliss." So, back to the Los Lonely Boys. Radio is definitely feeling the vibe of this song. This reminds of the spirit that was shown in Uncle Kracker's "Drift Away" hit in 2003. It's great that songs, from other genres that don't get much attention, are getting airplay. The guitar work on this song is truly beautiful and if you haven't heard the song yet, you owe to yourself to hear this song. Would I be too bold in saying that Haylie Duff is riding the coattails of her younger sister, Hilary Duff, to get her solo career of the ground? This week, the Duff sisters' Go-Go's cover "Our Lips Are Sealed" enters the top 40 of this chart. There's a couple of reasons why this song is having out-of-the-gate success. Reason #1 is that "Our Lips Are Sealed" is already a great song despite who sings it or who produces it. That's why covers are so successful. When you recycle old hits and reintroduce to the next generation, you're bound to have hits. Reason #2 is that Hilary Duff has a lot of momentum from her breakthrough hit on the chart, "Come Clean." Her first two singles, "Why Not" and "So Yesterday" were CNG busts; they didn't even make the top 100. "Come Clean" came with a fury though and became one of the biggest CNG hits of the first half of 2004. A "chart truth" that I see on almost every personal chart (and every industry chart as well) is that if an artist has a #1 hit for the first time, it's almost an guarantee that the follow-up song will hit the chart and have the potential to be just as successful, even if the song isn't as spectucular as the first. Reason #3 is that it's obvious that the Duff sisters have experience singing together and their chemistry brings the song up-a-notch. Their voices blend well together on the track and they have the right attitude to convey the message of the song. Crossfade enters the top 40 with their first single, "Cold." True, Crossfade does sound like a poor man's Nickelback, Staind, Disturbed, (or any other mainstream rock band that's on the radio), but "Cold" manages to have the elements that could push this song to the top portion of the chart. First, since this is their first single, they have a "fresh" sound, which could catapult the group higher than it will normally go. Recent examples is looking at how Trapt and Lostprophets exploded on the rock charts this last year. Crossfade doesn't jump off the page as an elite mainstream rock group and that will probably be this song's downfall. This song is probably top 20 at best. "IT'S ABOUT TIME": VAN HALEN IS THIS WEEK'S GREATEST GAINER It's about time that Van Halen is back! Van Halen will be releasing a best-of-compliation, Best Of Both Worlds, and "It's About Time," sung by Sammy Hagar, is the promo single to launch the album and the tour. As I listen to this song, I notice something that it's missing. The song doesn't feel like a Van Halen classic but rather a modernized version of Van Halen who is trying to morph into the modern mainstream rock sound. However, it's a Van Halen song so even one that is not representive of their best material is still better than the majority of songs on rock radio. What will be amazing is if they could get David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar on the same track and release it. That would be an out-of-the-box #1 hit on rock radio. It will never happen though because all of the parties involved, the band, Roth and Hagar, have big egos and pride to work together. Roth and Hagar tried a tour in 2002 but the tour fizzled because neither singer could accept being an opening act for the the other. I remember David Lee Roth said on VH1 that "Sammy throws the parties while I am the party!" A brief message to David Lee Roth: You're missing out on so much money, dude! Nobody really cares about your solo material except for the hoes you probably pay to follow you around so come to your senses and come back to Van Halen. You're almost 50 now and you'll need the retirement money. Just give America one tour of you and Van Halen and possibly Sammy Hagar so the modern generation can see why Van Halen is one of the top metal bands of all time. A BRIEF LOOK AT THIS WEEK'S DEBUTS (#67): TANTRIC - The Chain: This Fleetwood Mac cover is Tantric's second appearance on the chart and has potential to become a top 40 hit. Fleetwood Mac covers has been present in the past couple years with Dixie Chicks' "Landslide," and Wilson Phillips' "Go Your Own Way." (#83): HOOBASTANK - Same Direction: Hoobastank's third single from The Reason. The title track hits the top ten ths week and "Same Direction" will attempt to be Hoobastank's 6th consecutive top 40 hit. (#87): SHIFTY - Slide Along Side: All of Shifty [Shellshock]'s singles have hit either #5 or #6 as a solo artist or fronting his group, Crazy Town. It will be interesting to see "Slide Along Side" will continue the streak. The single probably won't. (#91): LIZ PHAIR - Rock Me: "Rock Me" is the follow-up to top ten hits "Why Can't I?" and "Extraordinary." Same sound but different success potential due to lack of radio exposure for this song. (#95): ASHLEE SIMPSON - Pieces Of Me: "Pieces Of Me" is the debut single of Jessica Simpson's little sister. The song definitely is a different sound than a Jessica Simpson song and it's more like an Avril Lavigne song. Darkhorse hit potential. (#98): POP! - Heaven & Earth: This trance import from the UK debuts this week. It could be borderline "Pop!" but it definitely a trance song. Pop! is a two male, two female vocal quartet. Think Ace Of Base or ABBA where the females do the main vocals and the males are the musicians! (#99): THE HIVES - Walk Idiot Walk: The Hives are the modern-day Rolling Stones and it's apparent in this song. Too early to decide the fate of this song.
